Norwin High School will be closed Wednesday because of a sixth positive covid case at the high school within a 14-day rolling period.

The closure will allow contract tracing to be completed and for sanitizing the building, the district said Tuesday afternoon.

The school was closed upon the recommendation of the state Department of Health, with the intention that it will reopen on Thursday, as long as all contact tracing has been completed, Superintendent Jeff Taylor said. If the school will be closed on Thursday, Taylor said the district will inform families on Wednesday.

With the closure of the high school, teachers will provide students with synchronous learning on Wednesday, Taylor said. About 1,310 students attend high school for in-person instruction and about 310 take classes through the district’s Norwin Online Academy, which is remote learning.

All high school athletics and activities were cancelled Tuesday and Wednesday because additional contact tracing needs to be completed, the district said.

A curbside meal pickup that typically occurs on Wednesday has been rescheduled to Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the high school Door No. 6, the auditorium entrance.
