Norwin is planning commencement ceremonies for about 400 students at Knights Stadium on June 26 by dividing them into groups with different time slots.

That is because of the prohibition against having more than 250 people at a single gathering while Westmoreland County is in the green phase of covid-19 restrictions.

Superintendent Jeff Taylor said in a statement Friday the district opted for the modified ceremony this month, rather than wait another month for a traditional ceremony. A majority of parents of graduates who responded to a survey indicated they want the ceremonies held this month, Taylor said.

Families of seniors will have the opportunity to register for specific blocks of time. The logistics will be finalized over the next several days, and details will be provided June 19, the district said.

Regarding athletics for those students who will return to school, Taylor said school officials are working to complete a plan so athletic programs will resume by the end of the month. The plan must adhere to the state Department of Education’s guidance for reopening schools and be approved by the school board.

Taylor said 280 people volunteered to be on a reopening committee to prepare for the coming school year.
