The Norwin School Board and the district’s teachers union had an eight-hour “productive negotiation sessions” Tuesday and will resume talks on Sept. 1, the day after the current five-year contract expires, a union official.

Both the school district and the Norwin Education Association have “a number of issues” remaining to be resolved, said Kevin Chitester, a member of the union bargaining team. Chitester did not offer any specifics on those outstanding issues.

While the contract expires on Aug. 31, classes for Norwin’s 5,100 students are not scheduled to begin until Sept. 8.

Brian Carlton, school board president, declined to comment on the negotiations.

The big issues remain salary and benefits, said Russell Lucas, the district’s solicitor, following the school board meeting Monday night.

The teachers union, which represents about 320 teachers, guidance counselors and school nurses, received a contract in 2016 that provided teachers with annual raises of about 2.9% over the life of the pact.
