A Ligonier Valley police officer shot and killed an unidentified man Sunday at a township residence, authorities said.

Police responded to a Gravel Hill Road home about 3:50 p.m., which led to the shooting, Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli said in a news release. She did not elaborate on the circumstances of the shooting.

The identity of the man shot and killed has not been released by authorities. Responding officers were not injured.

Westmoreland County detectives and state police are investing the situation. Ziccarelli’s office said Gravel Hill Road, near Route 711 in Ligonier, will remain closed during the investigation.

Ligonier Valley Police were not immediately available for comment Sunday.

Melanie Jones, a spokesperson for Ziccarelli’s office, said it is standard procedure for the district attorney’s office to investigate all officer-involved shootings. She declined further comment.

Ligonier Valley Police is a regional police force formed about four years ago after a the merger of the Ligonier Township and Ligonier Borough police forces.
