Work could begin soon on a new, expanded GetGo convenience store in Unity, according to local officials.

Unity Township Municipal Authority has approved a developer’s agreement covering sewer construction related to the store planned at Route 30 and Giffin Drive. The project will include construction of a sewer line extending to property adjoining the store site, according to Doug Pike, authority operations manager.

“It does look like they’re going to be moving forward,” authority engineer Kevin Brett said.. “The plan has been approved for quite a while. It’s just some paperwork at this point.”

A spokesman for the Giant Eagle supermarket chain, which operates GetGo stores and gas stations, declined comment.

According to a site plan approved by the township supervisors in October 2019, the roughly 6,200-square-foot store would be developed on 3.8 acres currently occupied by vacant buildings of the shuttered Arnold Palmer Motors dealership. The new GetGo store would replace a smaller version in operation a short distance to the west, at Mountain Laurel Plaza.

The plan also includes a new amenity, a 2,500-square-foot car wash.

Township Supervisor Mike O’Barto, who also serves on the authority, said all local permits needed for the store have been approved.

Fire hydrant to be added

Barto said GetGo agreed to add a hydrant to improve fire protection in the vicinity.

“They’re being very responsible,” he said.

O’Barto referred to a recent fire call at the Burger King restaurant on a neighboring lot at the Route 30 intersection.

“The fire departments had to run lines a long distance,” he said. “The closest (hydrants) were one in the Walmart plaza and one in the Excela Square plaza.”

In September, GetGo opened a 6,000-square-foot store on Route 30 in Hempfield, at the site of a former PNC Bank branch near the border of Jeannette.
