A Latrobe area man was critically injured in a crash in Ligonier Township early Tuesday morning, according to Ligonier Valley Police.

Donald Hall, 49, was airlifted by medical helicopter to Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown after the crash that occurred at 12:06 a.m. on Darlington-Rector Road between Country Club Road and Route 711.

Police Chief John Berger said Hall was headed northwest in a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on Rector Road near Route 711 when he ran off the north side of the road “clipped one tree and then collided head on into a second tree” where he was pinned in the wreckage.

Authorities said Hall was partically ejected.

“We’re talking major, major extrication. The fire departments did a heck of a job freeing him,” Berger said.

Darlington, Ligonier Valley Hose Co. 1, Chestnut Ridge and Wilpen fire departments responded.

It took nearly an hour to get Hall out of the vehicle.

Alcohol and speed are both believed factors in the crash, Berger said.

The Ligonier Valley Police accident reconstruction unit and the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s investigative team also were at the scene, according to Berger.
