Paul and Denise Corrie, both of Manor, sit with their dogs, Bailey (left), a Boston terrier and foxhound mix, and Casey (right), an Australian shepherd mix, while having a portrait drawn by caricature artist Melissa Rubal, as two Great Danes, Theo and Sullivan (foreground), wait for their session on Sept. 7, 2019, at Bushy Run Battlefield’s first Paws in the Park community event in Penn Township.

Dog owners and their four-legged companions will feel right at home during Bushy Run’s Paws in the Park event in September.

Paws in the Park, which first took place in 2019, will host a variety of pet-oriented vendors, adoption agencies and activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 next to the Bushy Run museum off Route 993 in Penn Township. There is no charge for admission.

Some of the vendors will sell dog treats and toys. Adoption agencies will discuss their role in the community and which pets they have available for adoption.

Kids can design collars and make food for their pets, and owners of all ages can walk their dogs through an obstacle course. Attendees also can enter a raffle to win a basket of dog-themed items.

Although the 200-acre site is known for hosting a 1763 battle between British and Native American forces during Pontiac’s War, the majority of its visitors are residents and their dogs, said museum manager Matt Adams.

The event is meant to “celebrate the people that use the park” and connect them to other Bushy Run opportunities, Adams said.

“The space we have is actually kind of perfect for dogs,” Adams said. “People have been creative by using it as a space for their pets.”
