Coroner: Man hit by train near South Huntingdon-Smithton border died by suicide

A man who was hit by a train Monday morning at the border of South Huntingdon and Smithon died at noon, authorities said.

The 67-year-old Chartiers Township, Washington County, man died by suicide, according to a release from the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office.

The man was hit just after 10:30 a.m. by the westbound CSX train. The train used its horn and emergency braking system, but the man kept walking between the tracks, according to the release.

The train stopped in the area of Skyline Drive and Route 981.

Route 981, just over the Youghiogheny River from Rostraver, was closed for a time. The tracks cross over Route 981 on the east side of the river.
