Penn-Trafford-Jeannette area covid cases rise slightly

The Penn-Trafford-Jeannette area saw a 5% jump in confirmed covid cases over the past week, with the addition of 68 cases, based on data from the state Department of Health.

The health department counted 1,310 confirmed covid cases in the three communities as of Dec. 29, up from 1,242 as of Dec. 21. The tally of coronavirus cases dates back to March, the beginning of the covid crisis in the region.

The region, which is spread over six ZIP codes, has seen a downward trend in the number of new coronavirus cases, week-over-week. There were 175 new confirmed cases from Dec. 14 to 21.

There have been 704 confirmed coronavirus cases, up 39 cases since Dec. 21, in the Jeannette 15644 ZIP code, which covers part of Penn Township. There were 274 probable cases and 3,746 coronavirus tests with negative results.

In the 15085 ZIP code, which encompasses Trafford and part of North Huntingdon, the state found 295 confirmed cases as of Dec. 29. There were 83 probable cases in that ZIP code and 1,478 negative test results since March.

The Harrison City 15636 ZIP code, there were 173 confirmed cases, 61 probable and 729 negative coronavirus test results as of Dec. 29, the state said.

The Manor 15665 ZIP code saw 75 confirmed cases as of Dec. 29, 32 probable cases and 271 negative test results.

The Penn Borough 15675 ZIP code had 33 confirmed cases, 18 probable cases and 181 negative test results.

In the Claridge 15623 ZIP code, there were 30 confirmed cases, seven probable and 191 negative test results.

With a total of 7,906 covid tests taken by residents in the six ZIP codes, 16.5% have been positive.

A significant portion of Penn Township is also grouped under the Irwin 15642 ZIP code, but the ZIP codes are not drawn to cover municipal borders.

In Westmoreland County, the number of confirmed cases rose 6.8% to 14,188 on Dec. 29, from 13,276 as of Dec. 21, according to the state’s tracking website. There were 4,667 probable cases on Dec. 29 and 72,859 negative test results.

Since the covid outbreak hit the county, there have been 394 deaths as of Dec. 29, up from 365 deaths as of Dec. 21.
