A bridge preservation project and related detour are set to begin Monday in Fairfield while similar work continues just outside Hunker.
The Fairfield project will close a section of Midget Camp Road, between Tantlinger Hollow and Beaufort roads, that crosses Tubmill Creek.
According to PennDOT, the closure is expected to be in place through late October, with motorists detouring on Route 711 and Creek Road.
Workers from Gulisek Construction will apply a latex overlay on the concrete bridge deck, repair drainage structures and concrete, seal cracks and joints and mill and pave the bridge approaches.
A bridge-related closure of Hunker-Waltz Mill Road near Hunker that was expected to wrap up by the end of September has been extended through at least mid-October.
On Aug. 18, a Gulisek crew began preservation of a bridge that carries that road over Sewickley Creek. The road remains closed between Penn Valley and New Stanton-Ruffs Dale roads in Hempfield, with drivers diverted along portions of I-70, Buttermore Avenue/New Stanton-Ruffs Dale Road and Hunker Road/Hunker-Waltz Mill Road.
Both projects are part of a $3.03 million effort to preserve eight bridges in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
More road work
Meanwhile, PennDOT is planning additional work on roads in Westmoreland County during the week beginning Monday:
• Paving will take place on Brownstown Road in North Huntingdon.
• A slide repair will take place on Paintertown Road in North Huntingdon.
• Shoulder cutting will take place on Route 819, Athena Drive and Treesmill Road, all in Salem.
• Pipes and box culverts will be installed on Laughner Road in Fairfield and Plumbers School Road in South Huntingdon.
Crews will pick up litter, replace road signs and perform other tasks on various routes countywide.
Motorists should anticipate potential detours, lane restrictions and flaggers in work areas.
Residents can call PennDOT toll-free at 800-349-7623 to report road maintenance concerns and the locations of dead deer on state highways.
