The state will unveil plans to modernize a two-mile section of busy Route 30 from the western end of Westmoreland County to North Versailles, Allegheny County.

The proposed design plans for the roadway from the Carpenter Lane/Leger Road intersection in North Huntingdon to Route 48 in North Versailles will be on display from 5 to 7 p.m. May 29 at the Hartford Heights Volunteer Fire Department, 14335 Route 30, North Huntingdon.

PennDOT’s District 12 in Uniontown, which is overseeing the project, will provide an updated project video and plan displays. PennDOT representatives and the agency’s design consultants will be at the meeting.

“We are looking for public input to make sure all are informed with what we are doing,” said Joshua J. Zakovitch, Route 30 project manager for PennDOT.

Zakovitch and Michael Turley, North Huntingdon assistant manager, declined to discuss plan details prior to the public meeting.

PennDOT hopes to have plans completed so construction on the two-mile section can begin in 2024, if not earlier, Zakovitch said.

Zakovitch said it is dependent on the availability of money for a project estimated to cost anywhere from $40 million to $80 million.

“Route 30 desperately needs addressed,” Turley said.

Modernizing the 2-mile section of Route 30 is part of PennDOT’s plans to overhaul the roadway from the 10th Street intersection in Irwin to Route 48. The project hopes to increase economic vitality along the 5.5-mile corridor and improve safety, in part by using jughandle exit ramps for left-hand turns to avoid rear-end collisions in the turning lane. It carried a price tag of about $100 million in 2017.

The state initially divided the project into two phases — from Malts Lane in North Huntingdon westward to Route 48, and the second segment, from 10th Street Extension in Irwin, westward to Malts Lane. Construction on the Malts Lane portion was to be done in 2022, according to earlier plans.

Zakovitch said he was not certain if the next section of Route 30 to design will extend eastward from Carpenter Lane. The projects will be coordinated with funding that is available, Zakovitch said.

PennDOT recently presented the plans to stakeholders along the Route 30 corridor from Route 30 to Carpenter Lane, Turley said.

“We need more information, more details,” Turley said.
