The outpouring of community support has been overwhelming for the family of a Penn Township boy who was involved in a lawnmower accident over the weekend that resulted in the amputation of his feet.
Ashley Dimperio said Wednesday she started a GoFundMe page to raise money for her nephew Liam Lavelle’s family with an original goal of $10,000. That goal was blown away within six hours, she said.
There has been more than $101,000 donated through the site as of Thursday.
“We just want people to know how thankful we are,” she said.
The accident happened Saturday, and Liam was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, according to Harrison City Fire Protection Association. Liam’s father is a firefighter.
Dimperio said Liam has had three surgeries, and more are planned the next few days.

Outside of the GoFundMe page, there has been community support ranging from donations to offers to buy school supplies for Liam’s older brother, she said.
“It goes so far beyond” the online fundraiser, she said.
A Meal Train page has been set up for the family with at least 32 meals set up over the next couple of months. All of the help has relieved some stress for the family, which will need continued support, Dimperio said.
“There’s no words to say how appreciative everyone is,” she said.
The fire association echoed those words in a statement.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of support to Liam’s family during this difficult time as it demonstrates the spirit of our community’s caring for one of our own,” the statement said.
