A fire caused significant damage and likely started in a second floor bedroom of a house on Low Street in Mt. Pleasant Township.

Dogs and cats were rescued from a home that caught fire in Mt. Pleasant Township Wednesday morning.

No people were home at 6802 Low St. but there were pets in the house as smoke billowed from the upstairs windows, according to Hecla Volunteer Fire Department firefighters and neighbors at the scene.

“We got all of the animals out of the house,” said Michael Meloy, assistant fire chief of Station 88. “But we knew there was one more kitten. We weren’t sure it was going to make it, but it did.”

Meloy said the fire caused significant damage and likely started in a second floor bedroom.

The owners of the home were not identified.

Low Street, which is also Route 819, was closed to traffic until the fire was extinguished.
