A Cook Township man’s dog was shot Sunday night after leaving his property, police said.

The pit bull belonging to Mark E. Ahner, 60, of Stahlstown, escaped the property and became aggressive toward two men near the intersection of Main Street and Hoffer Plan in Stahlstown shortly after 9:30 p.m., according to state police from Troop A in Greensburg.

Police said the men discharged firearms in self-defense, killing the dog.

Ahner received four citations on Wednesday, charging him with failure to properly confine a dog deemed dangerous.

Ahner was also awaiting an appeal hearing of a November 2021 citation for dog-law violations. State police said his 3-year-old pit bull, named Tinkerbell, escaped to a neighbor’s property “where it attacked and severely injured another dog,” according to the citation.

That appeal is scheduled for June 28 in the county’s Court of Common Pleas before Senior Judge Richard E. McCormick Jr.
