Lawyers for two men charged in connection with a shootout in downtown Greensburg told a Westmoreland County judge on Tuesday that negotiations toward potential plea bargains are ongoing.
As a result, a planned June trial was postponed for at least two months as defense attorneys and prosecutors attempt to hash out details to resolve the attempted homicide cases against Evan Curley, 24, of Greensburg, and Stevin German, 28, of Uniontown, who have been in jail since their arrests in the days that followed a Jan. 30,2022, shooting outside the Rialto Bistro.
Curley and an bystander were injured as nine shots were fired along Pennsylvania Avenue after a dispute between the men spilled outside the bar.
“We are actually entertaining plea negotiations so we do not object to the continuation of the trial,” said Curley’s lawyer, Brent McCune.
German’s lawyer, Assistant Public Defender John Sweeney, said talks with prosecutors have been productive.
“We’ve made some headway towards a plea,” Sweeney said.
Curley and German are charged with attempted homicide, reckless endangerment and multiple counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting.
During previous court appearances, lawyers said both men would claim the other initiated the shootout as part of self-defense claims.
According to court records, Curley and German argued inside the bar before they each left to retrieve guns from their vehicles and returned to the Rialto. The fight spilled out onto the street and shots were fired.
Police said German fired eight shots, including two that wounded Curley. One round shattered a glass window on a walking bridge over Pennsylvania Avenue which connects to the Westmoreland County Courthouse Extension office building. Curley fired one shot that struck a bystander, police said.
