State police were investigating the Thursday morning discovery of what they described as a suspicious item in North Huntingdon.
Troopers worked at Route 30 west and the entrance ramp to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Trooper Steve Limani said the item was found inside a broken wooden box by a PennDOT worker around 7 a.m. Thursday on turnpike property.
The item has been sent to a lab for testing.
The area was secured for several hours as a precaution. Limani said Thursday afternoon that authorities were awaiting the arrival of a police dog to check for explosives.
“They just want to make sure that it’s not anything bad,” he said.
Traffic was disrupted because of the police activity. Anyone who saw a wooden box in that area is asked to call state police at 724-832-3288.
