A juvenile male suspect was in custody following a shooting Tuesday evening in Jeannette that sent two people to AHN Forbes Hospital, according to city police.

A 19-year-old man was one of the two people wounded in the shooting outside a South Third Street home.

His mother, who declined to be identified, said her son was shot during a visit at her South Third Street home.

She said her two younger children were inside the house when the shooting occurred.

The woman said her son was in surgery.

Details weren’t available concerning the second victim.

That person was her son’s friend, the woman said.

Police declined to discuss what may have caused the shootings.

Lois Miller, a neighbor on Cuyler Avenue, said she was in her house when she heard four pops between 4:45 and 5 p.m.

She said she thought it was fireworks.

“I paid no heed till I saw the cops” converge on the house, she said.

One victim ran two blocks to the 300 block of South Fifth Street and walked into the home of childhood acquaintance, Makayla Middleby. He was bleeding and plopped down on the couch, with wounds to the wrist and groin, she said.

“I just applied first aid and tried to stay calm,” Middleby said.

Her mother, Helen Haven, said he walked through the unlocked door at 4:43 p.m.

Haven said they did not realize how bad the man was shot until he pulled his pants down and they saw the blood.

Haven said he wanted them to take him to Excela Latrobe Hospital, a distance of about 18 miles, but she called Westmoreland 911.

The ambulance came to the house and Haven said an emergency responder said her daughter saved his life by slowing the bleeding.
