A paper grocery bag containing smashed vehicle parts and an anonymous tip helped Southwest Greensburg police on Friday find a pickup truck they believe was involved in a hit-and-run that injured a man this week.
A state trooper who specializes in crash reconstruction determined from the “puzzle pieces” that investigators were looking for a Ford Super Duty pickup truck, Chief Christopher Kent said.
“He was able to look at the physical evidence that we retained and he was able to make a determination for what he believed the type of vehicle was,” Kent said.
Police expect to file charges. They were executing search warrants, gathering more evidence at the scene and attempting to talk to the driver.
Police were called to the intersection of Sidney and Westminster streets at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday and found a man lying unresponsive.
He is being treated at an Allegheny County hospital. Authorities did not identify him, but said he is in his 30s.
Police put out a plea on social media Thursday afternoon, seeking information about the vehicle that was involved. They got an anonymous tip that led them at 2:30 a.m. Friday to a truck parked in Greensburg. The Ford F-450 with damage to the grill belongs to a local construction company. Police said they talked to the owner, who directed them to a person who would have been driving the truck at the time of the collision.
”Social media can be a very double-edged sword in law enforcement…,” Kent said. “There’s a lot of times that we’re able to get information out like this, and the public’s a great help because our eyes can’t be everywhere.”
