Police: Intoxicated man had heroin, Xanax in backpack when crashing into Greensburg parked cars
An Allegheny County man is being held without bail after police said he crashed into several parked cars in Greensburg, according to court papers.
Dajon Anthony Smith, 26, was wearing a backpack that police said had 150 stamp bags of heroin and a “large amount” of suspected Xanax bars.
Officers were called to South Hamilton Avenue just before 4 a.m. Saturday and found a resident who was yelling for police and holding Smith down in the front yard, according to court papers. Police said Smith was driving a BMW car on neighboring Madison Avenue when he hit four vehicles.
When Smith’s vehicle became disabled, he fled on foot. He was “obviously impaired” and smelled of alcohol when they caught up with him on South Hamilton Avenue, officers said in court papers. Both streets are in a residential area near Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital in the western part of the city.
Police said Smith did not have a driver’s license.
He is charged with drug possession, driving under the influence, accidents involving damage to unattended vehicles, careless driving and driving without a license.
District Judge Chris Flanigan deemed him a danger to the community in denying him bond, according to online court records. Smith did not have an attorney listed. He is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 27.
Smith served a state prison sentence of 30 to 60 months and one year of probation after pleading guilty to a weapons violation stemming from a November 2012 incident in McKeesport, according to online court records. He was sentenced to six to 12 months in jail and seven years of probation on a different weapons violation that happened in McKeesport five months earlier.
