A Greensburg man and a Norwin teacher face charges stemming from the man’s failure to report an arrest that would have disqualified him from volunteering with Norwin Middle School’s musical in February, according to court papers.
Brad W. Geyer, 37, and Tobitha J. Sasso, 40, who founded the school’s theater group, were charged with noncompliance after it was found that Geyer’s clearance to work with children is invalid because of his arrest. Geyer was charged because he didn’t report his arrest and Sasso was charged for failing to require Geyer to submit an updated clearance, North Huntingdon police said.
Police said Sasso selected Geyer as a volunteer and he worked with school thespians in the group Sasso formed during the 2016-17 school year.
In April 2018, he was arrested after a teenage girl reported he had sexual contact with her between May 2015 and May 2017. She told investigators that Geyer touched her sexually and allowed her to drink wine at his house.
The arrest came after the school’s play that year, police said.
Geyer pleaded guilty in November in Fayette County court to corruption of minors and providing alcohol to minors. Police said Sasso invited Geyer in February to help at Norwin Middle School with a production issue at a dress rehearsal for “Frozen Jr.”
Geyer “worked directly with the children” between Feb. 18 and 22, according to the complaint. “Frozen Jr.” was performed Feb. 20, 21 and 22. District officials said they learned about the situation from a parent afterward.
Geyer directed questions from a Tribune-Review reporter to his attorney, who could not be reached. A message was left for Sasso. District officials said they can’t comment on a personnel matter when asked about Sasso’s employment status.
The charges have been mailed by summons. Neither Sasso nor Geyer had an attorney listed in online court records. Preliminary hearings are set for June 17.
Geyer previously was a Connellsville City councilman and legislative aide to state Sen. Pat Stefano. He was terminated from his aide position after the charges were filed. He was removed as president of a small Westmoreland County theater, the Geyer Performing Arts Center in Scottdale, after the allegations surfaced.
He had been involved in the theater since the mid-2000s.
