Police: Owner of car involved in Hempfield e-bike fatality charged with resisting arrest
A Jeannette man who state police said owned the car involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Hempfield was charged Monday in connection with an alleged incident at his home during the investigation.
Troopers said they were led to the North Third Street home of James S. Grady II, who was identified as the registered owner of a Kia Rio believed to have hit and killed bicyclist Jayden Lynch, 19, around 11 p.m. July 31.
At 3 a.m. Aug. 1, police tried to serve a search warrant on Grady’s home, but had to force their way inside after there was no response, according to court papers.
Troopers said Grady refused to listen to commands and tried to avoid being handcuffed. He had to be carried out of the house, according to court papers.
He was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Grady did not have an attorney listed in online court records and could not be reached. The charges were sent by summons, and an Oct. 23 preliminary hearing was set.
No charges have been filed in connection with the fatal crash.
Police said they used debris from the wrecked car and license plate information to identify the Kia believed to have hit Lynch, of Jeannette. Lynch was riding an e-bike west on College Avenue in Hempfield when he was hit near North Greengate Road. Police said both the bicycle and car were headed toward Jeannette.
State police shut down College Avenue for hours while they investigated the crash.
It appeared that Lynch was riding the e-bike on the road at the time he was struck, authorities have said.
A damaged Kia was found parked outside Grady’s house. Investigators previously said multiple people were at the home.
