A Rostraver man was hospitalized early Thursday after being shot while assaulting his elderly mother, township police said.

Christopher N. Visnich, 37, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His leg wound was not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Officers were called at 2 a.m. Thursday to an Elmhurst Drive home in the village of Fellsburg for a report of a domestic assault. Visnich and his 72-year-old mother were arguing when he began beating her with a piece of a metal garment rack, police Chief Greg Resetar said.

Visnich was shot once when his 72-year-old father intervened, Resetar said. No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting, which Resetar said remains under investigation.

Visnich is charged with terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and simple assault. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records.
