A Pitcairn man died Thursday, a day after his car was rear-ended at the interchange of routes 66 and 22 in Salem, according to state police and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

John Farally, 56, of Pitcairn was waiting at a stop light on Route 66 north at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday when the Mazda 3 he was driving was hit from behind. A BMW driven by Tyler J. Strini, 27, of Homer City did not slow down for stopped traffic, troopers said.

Farally was taken to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, police said. Firefighters extricated him from the car. He died at the hospital at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the medical examiner.

Strini was evaluated at UPMC East in Monroeville for minor injuries.

State police had parts of the interchange blocked off for a reconstruction of the crash until about noon. While traffic was being detoured, firefighters were called to a second crash not far away on Route 22. Two people were hurt in that incident.
