Jeannette man surrenders after 11-hour standoff with police
A Jeannette man surrendered Wednesday morning after an 11-hour standoff that police said began when Westmoreland County sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve him with a protection-from-abuse order.
Sheriff James Albert said the order directed deputies to evict Jesse McCurdy, 49, from his home on Good Street. They were also authorized to confiscate firearms and remove a teenage boy from his custody.
When deputies arrived around 6:30 p.m., they found McCurdy inside and he refused to answer the door or come outside, Albert said. Shortly after 7 p.m., deputies helped the teenage boy get out through an upstairs window.
Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Jeannette Police Department were assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team in setting up a perimeter and communicating with the man. As the standoff continued through the night, troopers used flash bangs and tear gas which prompted McCurdy’s surrender around 5:15 a.m.
Albert said McCurdy was being treated for minor injuries at a hospital. He was awaiting arraignment on a defiant trespass count filed Tuesday by sheriff’s deputies in connection with an incident in Jeannette.
