A Unity woman is accused of animal cruelty for allegedly leaving behind two dogs and nine birds after she was evicted from a Cook Township home in June.

Charges were filed Wednesday against Patricia Canton, 51, by a humane police officer from North Huntingdon rescue group All But Furgotten.

Canton was evicted from a Lone Maple Lane home on June 21 and did not return for her pets, according to court papers. Three days later, humane agents seized six parakeets, three cockatiels and two female dogs, a husky and an Anatolian shepherd.

All of the animals appeared to be living in poor conditions, authorities said. The birds were in cages with layers of feces with little to no food or clean water. The husky was infested by fleas and had hair loss, according to the complaint.

The shepherd was confined to a muddy kennel with little shelter. Canton is charged with numerous counts each of animal cruelty and animal neglect.

The charges were sent to her by summons. She did not have an attorney listed in online court papers. A Sept. 27 preliminary hearing is set. Canton could not be reached.
