Refugees wait in a crowd for transportation after fleeing from the Ukraine and arriving at the border crossing in Medyka, Poland, last month.

A group of area religious leaders will lead a prayer vigil for the people of Ukraine from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bononi & Bononi parking lot at the corner of South Main and East Third streets in Greensburg.

“We want to present a unified message on Russia’s war against Ukraine and to help those who are suffering,” said Bob Errett of Greensburg, a spokesman for Voice of Westmoreland, a citizen activist organization that is sponsoring the prayer vigil.

Among the speakers will be the Rev. Bobbie Hineline, pastor of Christ United Church of Christ in Latrobe; the Rev. Linda Theophilus, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Eastmont in Penn Hills; Rabbi Sara Perman, rabbi emerita of Congregation Emanu-El Israel in Greensburg; and Sister Barbara Einloth, vice president of the Sisters of Charity at Seton Hill University in Greensburg.

The prayer vigil, sponsored by the Voice of Westmoreland, is being held in conjunction with an anti-war exhibit at the StopWatch Gallery & Studio, 323 S. Main St., which is owned by VOW members Marc Snyder and Dr. Marti Haykin.

Donations at the prayer vigil will be accepted for two organizations providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine: Sane Ukraine, based in Great Britain, and the Lutheran World Federation, a Geneva, Switzerland-based global communion of Lutheran churches, Errett said.
