Quick action on the part of Appalachian Millwork employees and their neighbors at the A.J. Myers bus garage likely saved the custom millwork building early Thursday evening, officials say.
Fire crews were called to the building, on Menasha Lane in Derry Township, just after 4:30 p.m., according to Westmoreland County 911 dispatchers.
An employee of nearby A.J. Myers said workers from both businesses rushed in with fire extinguishers to try to give fire crews a leg up in fighting the fire.
“If it wouldn’t have been for them, we could’ve lost the whole building,” said Derry Township Fire Chief Mark Piantine. “We still had to cut some trenches in the roof to get the smoke out.”
The fire was brought under control around 5 p.m.
No one was injured.
