The Greensburg Ollie’s Bargain Outlet has been shut down because of a rodent infestation, according to the state Department of Agriculture.
A Tuesday inspection report showed there was evidence of rodent activity in multiple areas of the store. There were excess droppings and urine found, wrote the inspector from the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services.
The store will be closed until the pests are eliminated and building cleaned. Signs on the front doors notified customers.
“The facility has been closed due to an imminent health hazard caused by rodent infestation,” the inspection report said.
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet moved into the Davis Shopping Center along East Pittsburgh Street in the early 2000s, according to TribLive archives. With the slogan “Good Stuff Cheap,” Ollie’s sells brand-name closeout merchandise and excess inventory in a variety of departments including home decor, grocery, electronics and automotive.
There are several Ollie’s stores around the region, including East Huntingdon, Monroeville, Rostraver, Frazer and Allegheny Township.
It was unclear when the Greensburg store would be re-inspected. The inspection report indicated that the store should contact the state when the issues have been remedied.
A notice on the front doors from Greensburg’s code enforcement officer deemed the structure unsafe. Occupancy was prohibited except for certain reasons, such as securing the store and removing the hazardous condition.
Tuesday’s inspection wasn’t the first time state officials have noticed rodent activity in the store. An August inspection showed evidence of rodents in the birdseed area. The store had a pest control program in place and inspectors did not shut down the store then.
An inspection in June found no violations, according to state records. An Ollie’s spokesperson didn’t immediately return a message.
The Greensburg store is in a strip building with several other storefronts. The others — Dollar Tree, Papa John’s and Szechuan Garden — didn’t appear to be affected.
