Rostraver woman gets prison term for embezzling nearly $400K from credit union
A Rostraver woman was sentenced in federal court to 30 months in prison and one year of supervised release for embezzling nearly $400,000 from a Monessen credit union in 2016.
Patty L. Mavrakis, 65, was a branch manager for Valley 1st Community Federal Credit Union. She was charged in 2021 with embezzlement, wire fraud and use of fire to commit a federal felony.
Mavrakis was convicted by United States District Judge Marilyn Horan of embezzling $399,230 from the credit union and intentionally starting a fire in the credit union’s safe in an attempt to conceal the theft, according to a statement released Friday from U.S. Western District Attorney Eric Olshan.
Mavrakis claimed a faulty wire caused the fire that destroyed the missing currency, the statement said, and the court advised that Mavrakis used the embezzled funds on gambling.
The FBI and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted an investigation of the incident. The case was prosecuted by Attorney Lee Karl.
