Emergency crews respond to a crash on Route 217 at its intersection with Industrial Boulevard on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023 in Derry Township.

Officials have identified the person who died in a three-vehicle crash Friday afternoon at the intersection of Route 217 and Industrial Boulevard in Derry Township.

Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson identified the victim as David Leonard, 72, of Derry.

Carson said Leonard, traveling in a red Nissan Rogue traveling south on Route 217, collided head-on with a gray Jeep shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Leonard was a passenger. He was airlifted to Latrobe Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the crash.

State police said the 30-year-old woman driving the Jeep Liberty did not yield to the Nissan at an intersection and crossed in front of it, causing the collision. The Jeep sideswiped a second vehicle, a Nissan Sentra, troopers said.

The driver of the Nissan Rogue, a 60-year-old Derry woman, was flown to a Pittsburgh area hospital with what troopers described as serious injuries.

Airbags deployed, but seat belts were not utilized in the Nissan Rogue, police said.

The drivers of the Jeep and the second Nissan were not transported.

Route 217 reopened about 9 p.m., according to a county 911 dispatcher.

The manner of death is pending, Carson said. Toxicology reports will be available in several weeks.
