The tradition of running in a race in Greensburg on Thanksgiving morning to burn off calories before gobbling down a big meal returns this year with the 34th Greensburg Turkey Trot on Nov. 27.

The race begins and ends at the Westmoreland County Courthouse on Main Street. It attracts thousands of running enthusiasts and families who make it part of their Thanksgiving tradition. More than 2,000 runners and walkers have participated in recent years.

The race began 34 years ago when a group of running friends, who had been working out together during lunch for several years, decided to turn their lunchtime passion into an annual event.

“Thirty-four consecutive years for any event is quite an accomplishment, but for a community racing event to endure that long is incredible,” said Mark Sorice, one of the founders of the event.

“It is a signature community event that benefits many great organizations, and for many, it is a family holiday event,” Sorice said.

The running group created a nonprofit called Westmoreland Community Sharing to develop the event. Proceeds from the race support multiple nonprofits in the community.

The race has evolved into a U.S.A. Track & Field-certified course and is recognized for national records.

Race registration

Those who want to participate can register at secure.getmeregistered.com and search for Greensburg Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. There are also online forms that can be completed and mailed on the Turkey Trot website at greensburgturkeytrot.com.

The top three overall male and female runners andwalkers and top three overall Clydesdale runners — those over 200 pounds — will receive awards.

The race also is open for awards to family, high school and corporate team members, who can register as a group in either the run or walk category. The top three times of a group will be averaged to determine the winner of the Bupp Family Cup, and High School and Corporate Cup trophies.

Shirts can be picked up at the Westmoreland County Courthouse on Main Street in downtown Greensburg from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26. Registration on Thanksgiving morning for the 9 a.m. race and picking up shirts will be available from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Courthouse Plaza in front of the courthouse.
