Scottdale extended its normal 9 p.m. curfew for children during the school year to include anyone under 18, according to borough manager Angelo Pallone.

The altered curfew will remain in effect as long as the coronavirus pandemic continues, he said.

“It’s going to be enforced as long as the emergency is on,” he said.

Scottdale normally has a 9 p.m. curfew during the school year for anyone 16 and younger. Borough officials decided to expand it as a way to deter potential crime and gatherings of young people. Anyone 17 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or adult over 18 after 9 p.m., he said.

The curfew normally moves to 10 p.m. for anyone 16 and younger during summer months.

“Nine o’clock is the curfew until further notice,” Pallone said.

Police who see any child breaking the curfew can get in touch with that child’s parent or guardian. Officers will not provide the child with a ride home, he said.

“We just want to make sure our town is safe and secure,” he said.

Scottdale has a population of just over 4,000 residents, according to census estimates.
