Addison Jordan is only 12 years old, but the Scottdale resident has big plans for college — and $10,000 to help her achieve them.
Round Room LLC, a Verizon retailer and parent company to TCC and Wireless Zone, awarded $10,000 to five lucky students nationwide, including Addison.
“I want to be a surgeon, so it will definitely come in use, the money,” said Addison, a seventh-grader at Southmoreland Middle School.
TCC gives away backpacks full of school supplies to thousands of children every year. This year the company added something extra. Every child who got a backpack was entered into a sweepstakes to win a $10,000 scholarship.
Mallory Jordan, Addison’s mom, said she doesn’t normally participate in the backpack giveaways, but when she heard about the chance at a scholarship she made sure all six of her children were entered to win.
She could hardly believe it when she got the news.
“I almost cried,” she said. “Addie was jumping for joy a lot, she was flailing her arms about, pretty excited.”
The company gave out 140,000 backpacks this year. The other scholarship winners were in Missouri, Oregon and Maryland, where a pair of sisters both won, according to the company.
Mallory Jordan described Addison as passionate, hardworking and athletic. Addison plays on her school’s travel softball team. She said she loves playing sports, being outside and going to school with her friends. She’s not a fan of the home learning imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
She wants to attend University of California, Berkley.
She said she was so excited to learn about the scholarship that she barely remembers her reaction.
“I don’t really know my response, what I really did,” she said. “I was excited, very excited.”
