Sewickley Township pool closed for summer

Sewickley Township’s Crabapple Pool outside Herminie will be closed this summer because of the fear of covid-19, one of several municipal pools that will not be available for swimmers to beat the heat on a hot summer afternoon.

The Sewickley Township Supervisors made the decision this week not to open the pool, holding off on the final decision as long as they could, said Brian Merdian, a township supervisor.

The supervisors decided not to try opening the pool for a partial season, such as by the July 4 holiday, because they could not generate sufficient revenue to break even with the pool operations, Merdian said.

Even with the pool closed for the season, however, Merdian said the township will incur costs because it will have to run the pump and clean the filters because it can not allow stagnant water to stand in the pool all summer.

Although the pool will be closed, Merdian said residents still can rent township pavilions for gatherings, but must maintain social distancing and follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines by wearing a face mask to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
