A small fire in the ventilation system at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital was extinguished Friday, according to Greensburg Fire Chief Tom Bell.

The automatic fire alarm was reported after 11 a.m. at the hospital on West Pittsburgh Street. Bell said maintenance staff extinguished the flames in an air handler unit on the roof of the building.

“The smoke conditions were the problem,” he said.

Firefighters opened windows and used fans to push smoke out of the third, fourth and fifth floors, Bell said. Those floors were evacuated to elsewhere in the building.

No one was hurt. The street in front of the hospital was blocked off for a time.
