State troopers will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers during Memorial Day weekend.
Troopers based out of Greensburg, Belle Vernon and Uniontown are warning motorists in advance of the holiday that they will be conducting sobriety checkpoints around the area. But they aren’t saying when or where the checkpoints will be.
Police said their enforcement will take place in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
Troopers based in Belle Vernon will be working in an area in Westmoreland County that has frequent activity connected to intoxicated drivers. Troopers in Uniontown will start enforcement Wednesday.
A 1990 U.S. Supreme Court ruling held that police have to announce checkpoints ahead of time to meet a minimal standard of consent — if drivers know there’s a checkpoint and still drive, they’re effectively acknowledging that they could run into the checkpoint and be stopped.
