Students return to Twin Lakes Park for annual Envirothon competition

Greensburg Salem junior Riley Campbell tries to identify birds in pictures hung on trees during the Westmoreland Conservation District’s Envirothon at Twin Lakes Park on Thursday. Teams of five from various school districts throughout the region participated in the annual competition.

The annual Westmoreland County Envirothon on Thursday saw 110 students from 11 Westmoreland County high schools compete at Twin Lakes Park.

Winners of the event that tests knowledge of forestry, soil and land use, aquatic ecology and wildlife will represent the county in a state competition to be held next month at Camp Mount Luther in Mifflinburg.

This year’s environmental issue: renewable energy for a sustainable future.

Sponsored by the Westmoreland Conservation District, the Envirothon is known for its hands-on activities. Students might have to identify a fish, measure the size of a tree, identify a bird by the sound of its call or determine soil composition by touch. Teams spend months in and out of the classroom preparing for the challenge.

Students at the event included those from Burrell, Derry Area, Franklin Regional, Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Salem, Jeannette, Kiski Area, Mt. Pleasant Area, Norwin, Southmoreland and Yough.
