In recent months, Sun Dawg Cafe in downtown Greensburg has expanded its space and hours of operation and acquired a liquor license.

“We just thought to ourselves, if the opportunity should arise — and it did — we would love the opportunity to expand,” says Rachel Flowers.

She and her husband, executive chef Ray Flowers, opened Sun Dawg Cafe in 2012. In 2016, they relocated from a small basement space on Main Street to a nearby storefront.

“When we first opened, it was Rachel and I. It was actually like a food truck without wheels,” Ray Flowers says.

“Moving from 41 to 37 (Main St.), business increased 50%,” Rachel Flowers adds.

On Black Friday, they opened the new section formerly occupied by Trice Professional Optical Services, increasing seating from 48 to 92.

The original dining area has a bit of a tropical feel with bright pops of coral, turquoise and lime. Barn-style doors lead open into the new dining area, which features exposed brick walls and distressed wood flooring.

Primarily a breakfast and lunch spot, the restaurant also was open Thursdays and Fridays for dinner. Evening meals are now served Wednesdays and Saturdays as well, with dinner service beginning at 4 p.m.

Happy hour

With the addition of a liquor license, they are beginning a happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with drink specials and an appetizer menu.

Live music continues from 5 to 7 p.m. Fridays, moving to 7 p.m. on the Friday evenings when The Westmoreland Museum of American Art nearby hosts its Art on Tap events.

The owners hope the added hours and liquor license — along with plans for outdoor dining and happy hours in good weather — will bring more people in downtown Greensburg, or keep them there.

Evolving menus

The dinner menu will continue to change every couple of months, Ray Flowers says.

Among the most popular items on the January/February menu are the Ramen Bowl, a vegetable broth with julienned vegetables, bok choy, a poached egg, fresh herbs, fried wonton strips and chili oil for $10; and the Korean BBQ Pork Burger, a ginger scallion pork burger topped with oriental slaw and Korean BBQ sauce for $12.

Known for its Mexican-Caribbean fusion style, the restaurant’s menu also includes “some Asian twists,” Rachel Flowers says.
