A branch of First Commonwealth Bank in Unity was damaged when it was struck by a small SUV that swerved off Route 30 early Friday evening.

No one was injured, but the building on Sharky’s Drive was extensively damaged in the crash that occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to Lloydsville fire Chief Brian Schultheis.

“Luckily, the branch had just closed, and the employees were closing up,” he said.

The car crashed through the front wall of the building, resulting in structural damage, Schultheis said. He said two employees were inside the building but were able to safely leave by an alternate exit.

The man driving the SUV was checked by medics at the scene and indicated he didn’t want treatment, according to Schultheis.

He said the car was headed west on Route 30 when it swerved off the highway, went over a curb and struck the building.

“We are assessing damage to the building and will let customers know when we are able to reopen our office,” said Jonathan Longwill, vice president, marketing and communications, for First Commonwealth. “The safety of our customers and our employees is of the utmost importance to us.”

In the meantime, he noted, First Commonwealth has other nearby branches available in Greensburg, Derry, New Alexandria and Ligonier.

Firefighters from Youngstown, Latrobe and Bradenville assisted at the scene.
