Annual TakeOff Race honors fallen Trooper Iwaniec at Saint Vincent College

The 10th annual TakeOff Race in memory of Trooper Kenton Iwaniec will be held April 13.

The charity race raises money for a nonprofit foundation Debby and Ken Iwaniec, of Cook Township, created after their 24-year-old son died after an impaired driver hit his vehicle in Chester County.

There are several race options — a 1-mile fun walk, a 5K run and walk and a 10K. Children can participate in a 100-meter and half-mile races. A virtual race option is available for anyone who can’t make it on race day at Saint Vincent College in Unity.

Trooper Iwaniec was killed on March 27, 2008, when an impaired driver hit his vehicle while he was heading home after his shift. His family participates in speaking engagements and has raised more than $750,000 to buy preliminary breath test devices for police officers to estimate a driver’s blood-alcohol concentration and get impaired drivers off the road.

Registration is available online and the morning of the race in the Fred Rogers Center from 7-8:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies start at 8:40 a.m. followed by the children’s races at 9 and the run and walk at 9:15. The cost for the 5K and 10K is $40 after Wednesday.
