Traffic was affected on the Pennsylvania Turnpike westbound near the New Stanton interchange after a tanker truck crashed near a wooded area on Thursday.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike’s westbound lanes from Breezewood to New Stanton reopened Friday morning after repairs to the highway as a result of a crash Thursday near the New Stanton exit.

One person was hospitalized after a tanker tractor-trailer overturned about 1:50 p.m. Thursday during a collision with a flatbed tractor-trailer. The tanker went down a wooded hillside a mile east of the New Stanton exit, the commission said. The injured person was rescued and taken to a hospital.

A Westmoreland County Public Safety supervisor said emergency responders cleared the scene by 4 p.m. The Penn Township Ambulance Association technical rescue team assisted at the scene near Thermo Village Road.

The detour allowed for removal of the tanker and to repair the roadway, the commission said. No information had been released by state police Friday morning.
