Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners LLC, owner of the Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station near Smithton, is offering $6,000 in scholarships for college-bound students in Westmoreland County this year.

Tenaska manages scholarship programs in communities where its power plants are located and has given out approximately $760,000 in scholarships to date. This is the first year for the scholarship program in Westmoreland County.

Applications are available from guidance counselors and will be accepted from high school seniors from Belle Vernon Area High School and Yough Senior High School who will be attending a two- or four-year post-secondary institution. Deadline is Feb. 14.

Four $1,500 scholarships will be awarded. One of the scholarships will be reserved for a student planning to attend Westmoreland County Community College or Triangle Tech Greensburg.

Tenaska Westmoreland began operations as a natural gas-fueled power plant in December 2018. At 940 megawatts, it can generate enough power for approximately 940,000 homes in the PJM Interconnection market, which coordinates the delivery of reliable power in all or parts of 13 eastern states, including Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.
