The Westmoreland's upcoming Community Day will be last for a while
Fans of Community Day programming at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art might want to make sure they join in the Jan. 3 virtual installment.
Not only will it offer three hours of diverse programming, it also will be the last session for a while.
“This will be the museum’s last virtual Community Day presentation for the near future, as we take a hiatus and gear up for when we will be able to safely present these events in person at the museum again on the first Sundays of the month,” said Claire Ertl, the museum’s director of marketing and public relations.
“The line-up for this virtual version of our Community Day is really great, with contributions from many community partners,” she said.
Beginning at 10 a.m., free activities will include:
• Paint a Watercolor Portrait with artist Amy Roadman
Viewers wanting to join in should have these materials on hand: a piece of watercolor or mixed-media paper, pencil, eraser, watercolor paint, paintbrush, cup of water and paper towel.
Optional materials include oil pastels, crayons, watercolor pencils and colored pencils.
• ReMake a Card with Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse
Follow along as Daniel from Creative Reuse shows how to make a one-of-a-kind set of greeting cards using materials that probably are lying around the house, including old cards from past holidays and birthdays. The tips and tricks for card-making also can apply to scrapbooking and collage art.
Useful materials (not all are needed) include a cutting mat, craft knife, scissors, paper punch, markers, pencil, ruler, glue, double-sided tape, ribbon, stickers and thread.
• DIY Stuffed Animals with Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse
Cammie from Creative Reuse shows how to plan out the project, find the right materials and create a new friend using old fabric scraps of any size.
Materials helpful for following along include fabric, scissors, stuffing, needle and thread, pins, paper and pencil, chopsticks and embellishments.
• Children’s Story Time with The Greensburg-Hempfield Area Library
Listen to two stories read by library staff members.
• BOOM Jam Puppet Slam
The BOOM Concepts project celebrates puppets and ways they can be used to tell a story, sing a song, express emotions and inspire action. Puppet hosts Dr. D and PARTYMACHINE will share short puppet videos including karaoke, poems, dance, comedy and other topics that community members have shared with the museum.
• Children’s Story Time and Art Activities with the Blackburn Center
A collage craft session will follow a reading of “The Big Umbrella” by Amy June Bates, co-written by Juniper Bates.
Materials helpful to have on hand include a sheet of construction paper, sheet of red tissue paper, assorted pictures (magazine clippings or drawings of people and animals), scissors, glue stick, pencil, crayons and objects such as noodles, buttons, dried flowers or unwanted toys.
Community Day activities also will include:
• A brief walk through the museum and discussion on the artwork “The Dutch Boy” by Waldo Peirce, followed by a reading of “The Invisible Boy” by Trudy Ludwig and discussion around the terms “included” and “excluded.”
• Reading of “The Knight and the Dragon,” with story and pictures by Tomie dePaola, along with a puppet show.
Participants can join the online activities at any time from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Advance registration is requested, but not required, at 888-718-4253 or thewestmoreland.org.
