StoryZ Studios will host auditions on Monday and Tuesday for a staged reading of Euripides’ “Women of Troy.”
The play, originally performed 2,500 years ago, tells the story of the women of Troy held hostage and removed from their homeland, a story of family separation and the abuse of power.
There are three male and nine female roles. Actors will carry scripts and there is no memorization necessary. The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. March 27-28, and at 2 p.m. March 29.
The play is set in the immediate aftermath of the 10-year Trojan War, which had begun when Paris, a Trojan prince, eloped with Helen, the wife of Menelaus of Sparta. Viewed as an abduction, this event led the Greeks to lay siege to Troy. After brutal fighting and death on both sides, the Greeks finally sacked the city using the Trojan Horse, the soldiers hiding inside the massive wooden construction.
The city is in ruins, its men killed or taken hostage, and the Trojan women are enslaved and divided among the Greek victors who will transport them far from their homeland. The play acutely portrays the human cost of the city’s fall, the devastation of war, and the haunting grief of those left behind.
Auditions and performances will be held at St. Stephen’s AME Church, 19 Oak Street in Latrobe. Rehearsals will begin March 2.
