Motorists will have to obey stop signs for the foreseeable future on Greensburg’s Main Street after a traffic light blew over in high winds last month.

Superintendent of streets Tom Bell said the mast arm that held up the traffic light at the three-way intersection with Clopper Street was damaged Dec. 29.

He estimated the mast arm and signal at 15 to 20 years old. The intersection is now controlled by stop signs.

“The stop signs are going to be there for some time,” he said.

Greensburg council in April approved a contract with Bronder Technical Services to update some of the oldest traffic signals in town, including the one at Main and Clopper. The intersection was closed for a time Dec. 29 while the signals were removed, Bell said.

The $385,000 project, funded through a grant from the Commonwealth Financing Agency, also includes upgrades to signals at at Fourth Street and Westminster Avenue.
