Turnpike construction worker not hurt in Hempfield hit-and-run
A construction worker was not hurt after a hit-and-run on the Pennsylvania Turnpike early Thursday in Hempfield, according to state police.
A vehicle traveling west at 4 a.m. at mile marker 76.5 drove into the left lane that was closed for construction, hitting an arrow board directing motorists away from the road work. The board was pushed into a Chevrolet Silverado construction pickup that was parked in the closed lane, police said.
A worker inside the pickup was not hurt. The vehicle fled west. Police did not release a description of the vehicle.
According to PennDOT statistics, there were 348 work zone crashes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 2016 and one fatality. That number dropped in following years with 152 crashes on the turnpike in 2019 and no fatalities.
In 2019, three road construction workers in Pennsylvania died while on the job in 2019, either from a traffic or non-traffic related reason, according to Bureau of Labor statistics.
