A Norwin High School student and a Hahntown Elementary school student will have to stay away from school until completing isolation procedures after testing positive for coronavirus, school officials said Thursday.

Superintendent Jeff Taylor said the school district is working with the state Department of Health to help identify the close contacts of the students and is taking steps to clean and sanitize all buildings after learning Thursday from the families of the two students that they had tested positive for the virus.

The Department of Health will coordinate any necessary contract tracing for individuals. Those having close contacts are people who were within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes.

The only individuals who need to quarantine are those who have been personally contacted by the health department or the school nurse, Taylor stated.

“We will also continue to update families if any additional steps are required by the health department,” Taylor said.

Norwin officials said students with a positive covid-19 test should remain home and the school nurse should be contacted immediately if a student is symptomatic, has been in close contact with a person who is being tested, is awaiting test results or has tested positive for coronavirus.

The student should be in isolation for 10 days following a positive covid-19 test result. No follow-up test is required.

Students should remain away from school for at least 10 days since their first symptoms and remain fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications;

Those students who must remain away from school can receive instruction during their regular remote learning days, which is three days a week. They would receive the instruction that they miss on in-person learning days just as it has been in the past, the district said.
