The Unity American Legion post’s Memorial Day ceremony will look a little different from usual — but it will go on despite coronavirus restrictions.

“We’ve been kind of stewing here for the last week or so, and said, ‘That’s it, we have to do something,” said Jerry Dean, commander of Post #982.

The post usually hosts a Memorial Day luncheon with guest speakers.

“We knew we couldn’t do that, because we don’t have the space inside,” Dean said.

Instead, the post will gather outside for a flag-raising, reading and short speech, Dean said. Members will maintain social distance, and the public is asked to do the same if attending.

Dean said he felt the ceremony was the least the post could do to honor fallen soldiers.

It begins at 11:45 a.m. Monday at the post’s headquarters on American Legion Road, Latrobe.
