The Westmoreland Airpark could soon gain another large steel building.
The Unity Township Planning Commission approved extra acreage for one lot in the 210-acre industrial park. The commission on Tuesday approved a subdivision that will allow lot along Bayhill Road, near Route 981, to be expanded from 6.5 acres to 6.95 acres.
The lot — designated “1-R” — had been eyed for development by Freightliner, but that plan never materialized, said Tim Fyock, a project engineer with Benchmark Engineering. Local construction firm Modal now wanted to install a pre-engineered steel building on the site but wants a larger space, he said.
A specific plan for the proposed building soon will be submitted to the commission, Fyock said. Modal officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
The extra nearly half-acre will come from an adjacent buffer property along Route 981 that is owned by Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corp., the park developer.
Much of the 2.35 acres remaining in the buffer lot is part of a power line right of way and is not suited for development, Fyock said.
The lot slated for development is one of 10 parcels in the Airpark’s Phase II section.
According to a web page for the park, 15 lots have been sold and about a dozen more are available for development.
Among businesses occupying the developed lots are Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research, Industrial Tractor Parts, Hunting Energy Services and Latrobe Machining Corp.
