UPMC officials and members of the public check out the company’s new specialty care cetner on Wednesday in Murrysville.

UPMC patients in western Westmoreland County now will have specialists closer to home, following the opening of a specialty center Wednesday afternoon on Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

“I live two streets down, so it’s nice to know we’ll have these services so close,” said Dan DeBone, CEO of the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce.

UPMC Specialty Care initially will offer neurology, rheumatology, general surgery and cardiology services, according to UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport President Mark O’Hern.

“We’ll also have a small lab here,” O’Hern said. “As we looked at the data, we saw a lot of patients driving from Westmoreland County communities into Monroeville and into the city. So over the last few years, we’ve identified some key locations where we can have robust outpatient sub-specialty offices, in partnership with the primary care physicians who work in those communities.”

The Murrysville office, which opens on the heels of UPMC East hospital marking its 10th anniversary in Monroeville, will employ four staff members full-time, with a group of 15-20 doctors and specialists on rotation during the course of business.

UPMC spokesperson Lisa Lombardo said the health care company is renting the building and performed a full renovation on the interior.

“If you look at our specialty centers throughout the region, they have a similar look,” Lombardo said. “We have kind of a ‘recipe’ for our specialty centers, a way of laying things out to be able to fit all of these things into one location.”

The center will have 10 exam rooms and joins UPMC’s rehabilitation and specialty center at Salem Plaza along the Route 22 corridor in western Westmoreland County.

“I expect over the new few months, we’ll be able to rotate several other sub-specialties through,” O’Hern said.

UPMC Specialty Care is at 4448 Old William Penn Highway.
